Programme & Learning Objectives
- Vincent Wong (moderator and speaker): Introduction
- Annalisa Berzigotti: Clinical overview (15 minutes)
- Learn how hepatic steatosis and steatotic liver disease (SLD) is currently defined this point will deal with the new nomenclature proposed internationally
- Learn about the impact who should undergo screening for SLD this will shortly go through the epidemiology/burden of SLD, and show that the screening algorithms all imply identifying liver steatosis
- Learn about the main existing therapeutic strategies for MASLD this will briefly explain that lifestyle changes are able to improve SLD, and that the decrease of liver fat in non cirrhotic livers correlates with other important endpoints (resolution of inflammation); I will also very briefly show that there are several pharmacological therapies under development for MASH, with one medication already approved (Resmetirom).
- Giovanna Ferraioli: Attenuation coefficient and protocol for measurements (15 minutes)
- Learn the status of the research on the quantification of liver fat content with the ultrasound attenuation coefficient and the factors that need to be addressed.
- Learn how to perform the measurement of the ultrasound attenuation coefficient for quantifying liver fat content and what the confounding factors are.
- Learn how to use the ultrasound attenuation coefficient algorithms in daily practice.
- Richard Barr: Backscatter coefficient, speed of sound and combination of parameters (15 minutes)
-
Discuss the use of backscatter coefficient to estimate liver fat content.
-
Review how the Speed of Sound can be used to estimate liver fat content.
-
Review how the combination of quantitative ultrasound parameters can improve the estimate of liver fat content.
- Vincent Wong: Conclusions & discussion
