A recommended search technique for the uterus in the transverse plane is as follows:

  1. With the probe in the transverse plane in the midline, find the fundus of the uterus
  2. Move the probe towards the patient's left and start to angle upwards and downwards, still in the transverse plane
  3. Look for the left ovary between the fundus of the uterus in the midline, and the iliac vessels which lie close to the pelvic side wall
  4. Now do the same on the right side

Alternatively a similar directed approach can be used with the probe in the longitudinal plane, as follows:

  1. In the midline, find the fundus of the uterus
  2. Angle the probe to the patient's left, still in the longitudinal plane
  3. Look for the left ovary between the fundus of the uterus in the midline, and the iliac vessels which lie close to the pelvic side wall
  4. Now do the same on the right side
