Scanning in the Second and Third Trimesters: An Introduction to Technique

Session Overview

Description

In this session, we will discuss development of ultrasound skills to examine pregnancy in the second and third trimesters. We will consider how to establish the position of the baby in the womb (the lie), how to position the ultrasound probe on the maternal abdomen to achieve optimum ultrasound sections through the fetus and how to move the probe to follow fetal movement.

We will address basic fetal anatomy, how demonstration of this can be affected by fetal position and how knowledge of the anatomy will contribute to assessment of gestational age, fetal wellbeing and the identification of fetal abnormality.
