He is Professor honoris causa at Zhengzhou University, China. He studied in Hannover (Germany), New York (USA) and Montpellier (France). He studied Philosophy, Politics and History at University of Hannover. He achieved the MBA on International Hospital & Healthcare Management (Frankfurt School of Finance & Management). He specialized in internal medicine (1997), gastroenterology & hepatology (2000) including the Fellowship in Gastroenterology (EBG), pneumology (2002), hematology and oncology (2008), proctology (2009), palliative care medicine (2009), and geriatric medicine (2009).
He served as Honorary Secretary of EFSUMB from 2007-2011. He was President of EFSUMB, 2013-2015 and he was Vice President of WFUMB from 2017 – 2019 and WFUMB Treasurer 2022 – 2023 and WFUMB Administrative Council from 2015 to 2021. He was also chair of the WFUMB Publication Committee (2015-2021) and still active in the committee. His academic career is focused on endoscopy and ultrasound. He published > 600 peer reviewed scientific papers (H-Index 92) and > 500 book chapters. He has published textbooks in German and English. Translations have been published in Spanish, Czech, Polish and Chinese. He was President of „Deutsche Gesellschaft für Endoskopie und Bildgebende Verfahren“ (DGE-BV) in 2013. He is co-editor in chief for Endoscopic Ultrasound and section editor for Zeitschrift für Gastroenterologie.
